Innovation Strategy
I initiated and led a Product Innovation workstream at Dell Technologies, originating a 35-item Applied AI patent portfolio and incrementally securing $1M in funding by presenting business cases to Software Engineering and Legal leaders. With 22 applications filed as first-named inventor, I became the top inventor at Dell's Romania site.
What I find most notable about this record is that none of it was in my job description. I was hired as an engineer, with no innovation mandate, no dedicated time, and no special conditions.
The portfolio began as an experiment in whether invention could be made systematic, and it earned its formal status only after the process proved repeatable.
I believe that the process can be replicated in any organization where curiosity is genuinely welcomed and values are proven through actions.
In my experience, the keys to innovation turn out to be the Scrum values:
- Commitment
- Focus
- Openness
- Respect
- Courage
Extended by four more:
- Domain CapabilityWhich organizations already have at every level
- Innovation CapabilityWhich can be taught and structured
- LicenceGranted top-down by the organization
- MotivationWhich the organization either feeds or starves
Where these align, almost anyone can invent.
Innovation does not have to mean patents, and it does not have to mean funding new business units or betting big on disruption.
Small improvements, an automated step, a removed friction, a cheaper default, are the substance of sustaining innovation, and they compound: an idea that saves little in one place can be worth a great deal across a fleet of devices, a customer base, or an entire workforce.
Every idea in a well-run portfolio earns its place one of three ways: it makes financial sense, it enables something that does, or it serves people in ways that prove the organization's values, as work in accessibility or privacy often does.
This is what I do: I install the framework so teams can self-organize and invent, and I facilitate or contribute directly where it helps.
